London, 1st February 2008 — CB Richard Ellis Group, Inc. today announced the acquisition of Paul Gee & Co. Ltd, a privately-owned commercial property services company based in Aberdeen, Scotland. The acquisition will enable CB Richard Ellis to expand its leadership position in Scotland by combining Paul Gee & Co with CB Richard Ellis’ existing operations in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

CBRE Capital Markets has advised the Bank of Santander on the sale/leaseback of its 1,200-property portfolio in Spain. The deal is thought to be the largest real estate portfolio transaction ever carried out in the Spanish market. The 11 million-sq-ft portfolio comprises Santander’s new 4.6 million-sq-ft headquarters, along with 11 other regional office properties and more than 1,152 retail bank branches. The entire portfolio was sold for US$6.5 billion to three different investors within six months. (The regional offices were sold to real estate vehicle Pontegadea, owned by Amancio Ortega (Inditex Group), and the retail bank branches to Pearl from the UK). The transaction concluded in January 2008 with the sale and leaseback of Santander’s headquarters near Madrid to British real estate investor Propinvest for $2.8bn. The sale of the entire portfolio generated a net capital gain for Santander of $2.5bn

You’d think the title of this post is a joke paper title, but it actually isn’t. There are now at least two papers (the second one even uses the word ‘revisited’ in the title!) on quantum algorithms for geometric problems.
Neither paper (and they basically admit this themselves) really pushes the envelope in the QC dimension. The first one, by Sadakane, Sugawara and Tokuyama, uses Grover’s quantum search algorithm as a subroutine to solve a number of search problems in geometry, many of these reduced to the problem of finding the lowest point in the upper envelope of an arrangement of halfplanes. The second, by Bahadur, Durr, Lafaye and Kulkarni, uses a quantum algorithm for element distinctness based on a random walk method by Ambainis to solve some of the above problems. They also show lower bounds for some of these problems. One interesting result is an n^{2/3} lower bound, and nlog n upper bound (!) for 3SUM.
I’m not sure what to make of these results: apart from the fact that I have a hard time seeing a need for quantum algorithms for geometric problems, I don’t know whether these are anything more than (insert model of computation) algorithm for (insert name of problem) type results (not that such results are bad, but they are not always interesting).

Heute war der letzte Tag. Im Januar. Das bedeutet, morgen ist der erste Tag im Februar. Soweit eigentlich kein Grund, die Sektkorken knallen zu lassen. Allerdings ist wahrlich feierlich zu verkünden, dass morgen eine neue Dienstzeitregelung bei uns in Kraft tritt. Demnach fängt mein Dienst zwar immer noch um halb acht an, allerdings beginnt mein Feierabend bereits um viertel vor vier. In Zahlen: 15:45 ist Feierabend.
Damit wird mein Job zum begehrtesten auf der ganzen Wache. Ich habe es geschafft: Ich werde beneidet! Mwuahahaha!!
Privat hat das ganze auch noch ein Gutes: Ich habe ab sofort auch im Winter genug Zeit um abends laufen zu gehen. Ick freu mir wie n Schnitzel, wa.

For those of you who don’t know, I am located in Portland Oregon. Portland is one of the best places for a musician to get their feet off the ground. You could practically throw a rock anywhere within the confines of Portland and you’d most likely hit a musician. Of course, I’m not literally suggesting that you should throw a rock at a musician, but you get the picture.
Every night there are at least 20-30 venues featuring all kinds of music from avant garde, electronic, folk, bluegrass, pop, indie-rock, blues, experimental. I have really been interested in finding out more about what’s going on in the local scene, so this series will continue until I run out of bands to rave about. This is the first installment of the series, so I hope you enjoy it.
Tu Fawning
Tu Fawning are a duo from Portland Oregon who have both been fixtures in the local music scene for many years. Corinna Repp has two albums available on Hush Records that are in the confessional singer/songwriter vein with Corrina’s sweet voice layered over the top of electronic drumbeats. Joe Haege is the lead singer/guitar slasher from Portland’s prolific math rock/prog trio who have recorded 5 full-lengths and 3 ep’s since 2000.
Joe Haege and Corrina Repp decided to put their respective bands on temporary hiatus to record the yet to be released debut ep for Tu Fawning. From the two songs I’ve heard on their Myspace page, I would say that this album has the potential to be one of the best of 2008. “I’m Gone” sounds like a contemporary film noir soundtrack mixed with trip-hop. “Out Like Bats” is an exquisite song with soaring vocal melodies and chiming guitars that recall Zach Condon’s Beirut without the marching band sound. Keep an eye out for their debut EP!

Wie ich es hasse. Ich hasse es sowas von unglaublich häasslich, dass ich es kaum zum Ausdruck bringen kann. Karneval. Fasching. Verkleiden und auf Kommando lustig sein. Es mag den ein oder anderen geben, der darin aufgeht. Die Feuerwehrfrau zum Beispiel ist Mitglied eines Karnevalvereins. Ich aber kann der ganzen Lustigseinerei nichts abgewinnen. Morgen ist Tag eins. Weiberfastnacht. Bin ich froh, dass ich a) als Uniformträger keine Krawatte tragen muss und b) meine Rettungsdienststiefel keine Schnürsenkel, dafür aber eine Stahlkappe haben.
Morgen wird mir dann, wie im letzten Jahr und in den davor, die unschätzbare Ehre zuteil, ab elf Uhr die Alkoholleichen aufzusammeln. Versteht mich nicht falsch. Ich hab grundsätzlich nichts gegen Besoffene. Jeder von uns (der nicht absolut spießig ist) hat sich mit Alkohol schonmal bis zum Verlust seiner Muttersprache aus dem Leben geschossen. Kann ich verstehen. Da war und bin ich immer noch gerne dran beteiligt. Aber wenn die »Patienten« das sechzehnte Lebensjahr gerade erreicht haben, und dem billigen Schnaps so sehr zugesprochen haben, dass sie weder laufen, noch ihren eigenen Namen formulieren können, dazu noch stinken wie eine Mischung aus öffentlicher Toilette und Schnapsladen, ja dann endet auch irgendwann mein Mitgefühl. Und mein Verständnis.
Trotzdem. Ausschimpfen bringt nicht. Sie hören dich nur dumpf. Belehren hat keinen Sinn. Sie haben es am nächsten Morgen vergessen. Das einzige was hilft: Die Eltern informieren, dass wir die Früchte ihrer Lenden soeben mit Alkoholvergiftung ins hiesige Krankenhaus verbracht haben und, weit wichtiger, ihnen viel Spaß beim morgigen Kater wünschen.

Debido a la celebración del Día del Pisco Sour, este sábado 02 de febrero, la Cámara de Comercio y Producción de La Libertad realizará este sábado un festival gastronómico. 
En la actividad participarán bares y restaurantes de diversas localidades liberteñas como de Huanchaco, Virú, Las Delicias, Moche, entre otras, que se reunirán en el Centro Histórico de la ciudad.
Los turistas, empresarios y público en general degustarán una variada y completa culinaria trujillana, como el shambar, sopa teóloga, cebiche, arroz con pato, acompañada con Pisco Sour.
En abril del 2004 se instituyó el primer sábado de febrero de cada año como Día de Pisco Sour.
Al cierre del 2007, de acuerdo a cifras de la Comisión Nacional del Pisco, en el país existen 446 productores de pisco con denominación de origen.

Dentro de poco, acompañando los platillos de las mesas peruanas, se disfrutará de un buen pisco. Acholado, mosto verde, Italia, puro o torontel podrán ser degustados cual selecto vino en el almuerzo o la cena. Los expertos vitivinícolas señalan que el pisco no solo es una maravilla en el Pisco Sour, sino que puede ser usado como acompañante gastronómico. Por ello, realizan un festival con el que pretenden difundir las variedades y virtudes de un tesoro nacional del que podemos lograr ser los exportadores número uno en el mundo.
Álvaro Barrenecha, representante del PISCO TOUR ASIA 2008 señala que la mayoría de productores con denominación de origen de la zona del sur de Lima participará en las actividades relacionadas al día del Pisco Sour.
“Los productores van entendiendo que los esfuerzos para posicionar el Pisco provienen del Estado y del sector privado, por ello sus estrategias de promoción de sus productos están modernizándose, y vienen innovando en las variedades de Pisco”, agregó.
Una de las empresas productoras es “Gran Cruz”. Su equipo recibe 14 toneladas de uva por día durante el ciclo de producción. Actualmente continúan trabajando, a pesar de que sus instalaciones se vinieron abajo después del terremoto del pasado 15 de agosto.
Según el vitivinícola Jaime Morimón, el precio de un buen pisco no debe bajar de los 30 soles. Bajo ese tope, se logra recuperar el monto invertido en su proceso de producción.
Los tipos de pisco que se exhibirán durante el Pisco Tour Asia 2008 serán: Pisco Puro No Aromático, Puro Aromático, Acholado y Mosto Verde.
Algunas de las empresas pisqueras que participarán son: Pisco Santa María, Gran Cruz, Buena Vista, Sarcay, entre otras.
El objetivo del evento, auspiciado por Radio Programas del Perú y organizado por el Ministerio de la Producción y la Comisión Nacional del Pisco (Conapisco), es difundir el consumo de pisco, incrementar el consumo responsable y darle a conocer a los peruanos cómo elegir un buen pisco.

The Pop Group- Y
The Pop Group ranks up there with the Ten Thousand Maniacs as one of the most ironic band names in the history of rock music. This gang of left-wing political radicals from Bristol, England sound more like the antithesis of pop music. “Y” was released on the Radar label in 1979 to little fanfare, but Rough Trade liked the record enough to sign them.
“Y” is a cathartic and uncompromising avant garde record that mixed free jazz, art rock, funk, reggae and industrial music. There are very few hooks or decipherable vocals, but the impassioned delivery of lead singer Mark Stewart is undeniable. Highlights include the wildly eclectic “Snow Girl” where agit-funk shares sonic space with stinging guitars and intense piano hammering, “Savage Sea” with distorted vocals layered on top of a propulsive rhythm section with reverb and echo that sounds like lost sessions of Lee Scratch Perry and the caterwauling, free jazz funk of “Don’t Call Me Pain” that is reminiscent of an unholy alliance between James Chance and the Birthday Party.

Es ist meiner Erfahrung zufolge nichts Besonderes, auf einen Termin oder eine Nachricht oder einen simplen Brief von der Bundeswehr einen Monat oder auch mal sechs Wochen zu warten. Den letzten Kontakt zu den Berufsmördern hatte ich Ende November als ich in Koblenz war.
Ich dachte mir schon, dass die Burschen da Weihnachten feiern und die meisten Urlaub haben. Darum hatte ich mich mit dem Gedanken abgefunden, erst im neuen Jahr was von denen zu hören. Mein Plan sah vor, den Brüdern bis Ende Januar Zeit zu geben. Wenn ich nach links sehe, sehe ich meinen Kalender. Und wenn ich meinen Kalender sehe, fällt mir zuerst auf, dass er nur noch diesen Monat geht und dann leer ist. Das bedeutet ich brauche einen Neuen. Dann fällt mir als Nächstes auf, dass mein Ultimatum erreicht ist.
Also griff ich heut Morgen, bevor ich mich auf den Weg zur Arbeit machte, zum Telefon und rief da mal an. Die Frage war allerdings »Wo genau ist jetzt eigentlich da?«. Bei einem Arbeitgeber, der über die ganze Bundesrepublik verteilt ist, ist da potenziell schwer auszumachen. Ich hab aber dann doch einfach mal die Nummer eines der Offiziere gewählt die mir in Wilhelmshaven am sympathischsten erschienen. Bingo! Der KaLeu den ich da erwischt habe, war genau mein Mann. Ich erinnerte mich wieder, warum ich ihn so gut in Erinnerung hatte. Eine Fresse am Leib wie ein Landarbeiter, dabei stilvoll und witzig. Toll, wenn da alle so sind (träum weiter, kleiner Kudos).
Der Mann hatte einen Plan. Und noch besser: Er erinnerte sich an mich. Das wird er jedem sagen. Egal! Er machte mir weder Hoffnung, noch zerstörte er meinen Traum. Meine ärztliche Akte ist also endlich geschlossen (ich ließ ein ersticktes »STRIKE!« los). Ich liege bei dem KaLeu auf dem Schreibtisch (in Form einer Akte) und das einzige was jetzt noch fehlt sind Stellen. Es ist einfach noch kein Platz frei. Aber das sitze ich locker aus. Ich hab ja einen Job, ergo einen langen Atem. Mitte Februar weiß ich mehr.
